Scientific Citizenship Initiative

THE ASK

Partner with the Scientific Citizenship Initiative (SCi) to shape a cohesive, emotionally resonant design language for their growing body of programs, partnerships, and public-facing work. Our role was to translate SCi’s ethos — bridging science and society — into a flexible visual system that could serve everything from policy decks to public programming, and evolve alongside their organizational growth.

THE RESPONSE

Across four years of collaboration, our studio served as a creative and strategic partner to SCi, shaping the initiative’s visual identity and narrative presence as it evolved from an emerging idea into a respected academic force. We began by refining SCi’s brand foundation — building on the metaphor of the quilt to create a system that was both modular and meaningful. The brand had to carry academic weight while remaining accessible and emotionally resonant. Through deliberate typography, a grounded colour palette, and warm, human-centred layouts, we established a visual tone that could span audiences from policy makers to PhD students.

As the organization’s scope expanded, so did ours. We helped SCi translate its mission across media: from brochures and pitch decks to infographics, social media, and multi-page research reports. For key initiatives like the Massachusetts Science and Technology Policy Fellowship, we developed distinct but connected identities that honoured the parent brand while giving each program its own voice. We also advised on the structure and UX of the SCi website, ensuring that its storytelling was as cohesive online as it was in print.

Our role was not just executional, but strategic. We brought fluency in both design and institutional storytelling, helping the SCi team clarify messaging, align with funders, and communicate complex ideas with precision and grace. The result was a body of work that didn’t just express a brand, but shaped how the scientific community saw the possibilities of public engagement.
